Mamata distances herself from Partha, throws her weight behind Anubrata

Politics is a strange game and those who belong to this community enjoy it as long as feasible. In Bengal, it is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who calls the shots. She overthrew the Left Front government and came to power. Gradually, she used her unique tactics to win over the people and make use of every available opportunity to promote her programs. She deserves credit for large-scale diversification, beautification and innumerable innovations. Obviously, she had to rely on local leaders and some of them went in for underhand dealings. Mamata Banerjee, popularly known as Didi (sister) is a multi-faceted personality and a woman who is an artist, a poet and an orator par excellence. She did reprimand the erring grassroots workers m from time to time and had to have a strong man to keep a check on erring workers. Anubrata Mondal was one such individual. Therefore, when the CBI arrested him, Mamata-didi blew her top. Mamata comes out in support of Anubrata. She refused to accept the fact that Anubrata could be involved in cattle smuggling. That gave a boost to his ego.

However, a few days earlier, the ED arrested another of Mamata’s men. He was Partha Chatterjee, a Minister who held several other portfolios. At that time, Mamata-didi did not stand by him. In fact, she removed him from all posts and literally threw him to the wolves. Obviously, Partha felt bad because he had played an important role in promoting the Durga Puja. This helped Bengal bag the prestigious UNESCO Cultural Heritagee award. It was a feather in the cap of Mmata-didi. However, she chose to remain silent and Partha Chatterjee did not get her support. Both arrests were made by agencies of the central government. The Central Bureau of Investigation CBI arrested Anubrata Mondal while the Enforcement Directorate ED arrested Partha Chatterjee. Both agencies have to rely on evidence and intelligence from the local investigation agencies. That is a difficult task. Hence, conviction is usually a dream. It is all a game and everyone has to play his part.

Didi invited to Poland and Russia (satire)

There was once a time when Didi had never ventured out of her familiar surroundings but, then, she visited Singapore followed by London and even Italy and Germany – in her search for the elusive industries. Now she has been invited by Poland and Russia.
‘You will need new dresses for your visit,’ Omit Misra said. He was happy that the future could see real investment from these countries. Installing a duplicate of the Big Ben was fine but unless real industries arrived, it was difficult to convince the people.
‘Shall I ask some dress designers to drop in?’ Moo Cool asked. ‘They can show you samples and you can have your choice.’
‘Don’t be silly,’ Didi chided him. ‘I am not attending any fashion show. It is going to be a business trip. They came to our program, now I will go to their program. I want to build bridges.’
‘That is a good idea,’ Patro Chatto joined in. ‘There are hundreds of bridges that have outlived their lifespan and must be replaced. We must replace them.’
‘I know just the right person,’ Show Van spoke. ‘I handle all those contractors and know them like the back of my hand.’
Didi listened and it was clear that there was something on her mind. Normally, she would be pacing up and down the chamber. Probably, she is allergic to remain standing at one place. Or it could be linked to her health – she has to keep pacing up and down to maintain the circulation of blood in her limbs. Or - a stationary Didi might not be an effective orator or a leader who can command respect.
Suddenly the door opened and Dee Wreck entered. He looked after the publicity aspects.
‘Is your homework over?’ Didi asked.
‘Yes,’ Dee Wreck said and took his seat opposite her. ‘You can carry samples of chanachur – it is a product that they would love. I’ll ensure that they are packed in attractive packaging and, to promote it, there’ll be a music video. I’ve talked it with singers on that TV reality show and they’ll do it for a pittance’
‘Good,’ Didi said. ‘It will be a change from the pickles, amsatta and nalen gur that I keep carrying. Upload the video on the net and let people know that I mean business.’ (to be continued …)

Moody on UFO, Mangalyaan and Moon Mission for monkey baat (satire)

Moody had made a name for himself in a number of areas that had never been charted by any other political leader – one was his passion for selfies, another was his passion for coining new phrases and the third was his passion for talking. He was the most popular leader and, if and when, an Extra Terrestrial landed from outer Space, it would be sure to look him up.
Suddenly, the phone on his desk rang.
‘Yes, Moody here,’ he picked up the receiver and said.
There was a lot of crackling noise in the line followed by a continuous shrill blast of a whistle and then a voice came over.
‘Am I speaking to the most popular man on Earth?’ the voice asked.
‘Of course I am the most popular man on Earth,’ Moody replied.
‘And the man who loves selfies?’
‘Yes, undoubtedly. I set the trend and other leaders are following.’
‘And, the man who has travelled to all the countries in the world.’
‘Yes again,’ Moody was getting irritated. ‘But, who are you? I don’t recollect meeting you.’
‘You are right. We have not met yet.’
‘How did you get my number?’ Moody panicked. ‘Only a few top leaders of the world have access to my number.’
‘I am an alien, I don’t come under the control of any Earthling. I have my own UFO and can travel at will wherever I want to go. Do you want to meet me?’
Moody was amused. If an alien did come to meet him, it would be a unique experience.
‘OK Mr. Alien, please do make your entry,’ he said.
He was an orator par excellence and loved to hear his own voice. That is how monkey baat, the monthly radio program, took off. However, the novelty soon wore off and Moody was worried about which topic to talk on to hold the attention of his audience.
He had his answer. He would talk about UFOs in his next monkey baat, UFO, Mangalyaan, and Moon Mission. They all begin with M, just like his own name. Such a session would draw the younger generation to the radio.
A discreet knock on the door brought him back to reality. (to be continued …)
