Mamata Banerjee plays the dhak to begin the Durga Puja festivities

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee displayed her skills in playing the 'dhak' at an inauguration ceremony of one of the community Durga Puja in Kolkata. The dhak is a musical instrument that falls in the category of drums. Since it is a shoulder-mounted massive affair, the men usually choose beating the dhak as a profession. However, women are not far behind and women dhakis are gradually encroaching into a male dominated territory. Anyway, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee played the dhak at the inauguration of one of the high profile pujas. It is also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava and is an annual affair to celebrate the victory of good over evil when Goddess Durga eliminates the demon (asura) Mahishasur.

Incidentally, this year, the West Bengal government has increased the grant for the Durga Puja organizing committees in the state substantially. Moreover, the Chief Minister has declared September 30 to October 10 as a holiday period for celebration of the Puja in the state. This festival has gradually become an inseparable part of Indian culture with people celebrating it in their unique ways while adhering to tradition. According to Hindu mythology at this time of the year, Goddess Durga comes down from the Himalayas to her earthly abode to bless her devotees. Her four children Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh accompany her.
