During the pandemic, police stations collected data on hawkers in their respective areas. The present exercise by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and police is to find out whether there are more hawkers than the numbers registered during a survey in 2015. Such an exercise will help them to identify hawkers who have encroached on roads or are occupying more space than allotted. It will begin with Gariahat in south Kolkata and move out to Hatibagan and New Market. Officials of KMC and police representatives met with hawker leaders at the civic headquarters to fix the dates for the survey. Incidentally, hawkers have already taken over most of the footpaths. As a police officer said - “The number of current hawkers will be compared to the 2015 data. It is apparent that there has been a rise. With this survey, we will be able to quantify the gap.” Survey to identify hawkers encroaching on Kolkata roads starts on Wednesday.
Hawkers encroach on footpaths and force pedestrians to walk on roads, even at the cost of their lives or limbs. It was necessary to ensure “at least walking space” for pedestrians to protect them from road accidents. A senior official of KMC said - “The hawkers who are found to be sitting with the wares on a road will be asked to pack off immediately. Those who occupy more than onethird of a pavement’s width will be asked to remain within the space specified for them.” It seems the Town Vending Committee took the decision to keep two-thirds of the width of footpaths free. Hawkers have almost completely taken over the footpaths in Gariahat, Hatibagan and New Market.

Mystery surrounds the fate of Elon Musk’s proposed Hyperloop transportation technology from Los Angeles to San Francisco
Six years ago, Elon Musk wanted to develop and test his proposed Hyperloop transportation technology. His promise was to hurl passengers through tunnels in levitating, autonomous electric pods at more than 600 mph. its success would reduce the time of a trip from Los Angeles to California to 35 minutes. There were annual competitions involving engineers and students from all over the world to develop and test the proposed Hyperloop transportation technology of Elon Musk. Right now, the Hyperloop system has yet to see the light of day. As a result, the locals began to complain about road and pedestrian access. Hawthorne Councilmember Angie Reyes English asked city staff to request that SpaceX remove the tube. She said - “The city has been very giving and has been very supportive in efforts that SpaceX has had. But ultimately, we have other businesses and other things we need to consider, and to give the community their streets back.” Elon Musk’s Hyperloop prototype tube is gone. What does it mean for his tunneling dream?
There is no confirmation on whether SpaceX or Musk’s tunneling venture, Boring Co., are continuing to develop the Hyperloop technology. A media outlet first reported the Hawthorne tube’s removal this week. They called it “symbolic of a larger retreat” and said the Hyperloop project “has been indefinitely shelved.” However, SpaceX and Boring Co. did not respond to requests for comment. The last student competition was held in the summer of 2019. Since then, SpaceX has apparently abandoned operations at the nearly mile long test tube. Angie Reyes English said - “We just have to clean it up to ensure its safety and to ensure pedestrian right of way.” In view of Musk’s history of shelving tunnel projects, English is not sure whether the Hawthorne project is still running.

The Chinese XPeng X2 two-seater flying car completed the first public test flight in Dubai
Flying cars like the XPeng X2 could revolutionize urban transport. These would take the load away from city life transportation. Obviously, traffic on the roads would reduce and make them more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. Electric vehicles like the XPeng X2 would also reduce carbon emissions. Flying cars are still in the infancy stage but by successfully completing the first public test flight of its two-seater flying car the Chinese XPeng X2 has sent out a message. They did this at GITEX technology expo in Dubai. The flying car lifts vertically off the ground. It does not need any runway, is therefore suitable for built-up urban areas and can carry two passengers. moreover, it is fully electric, can climb at a rate of around two meters per second and reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. XPeng flying car takes to the air in Dubai. The duration of the test flight was just 90 seconds. An official of XPeng Aeroht says the technology is close to being ready for public use. However, regulations related to flying cars are still developing.
The company plans to work with governments to establish a physical regulatory infrastructure for flying cars in urban areas. It is quite possible that people would be able to use this mode of transport within five years. The Chinese government plans to launch flying taxis by 2025. Incidentally, the XPeng X2 is equipped with AI automation and can be driven manually or it can be set to self-drive. Right now, there are other flying cars under development around the world, and many of them actually fly. Examples are the Canadian firm Opener's "BlackFly," SkyDrive Inc's "SD-03" and Klein Vision's prototype "AirCar." The last one made a successful 35-minute test-flight between two cities in Slovakia last year.
